Hoppe Story
HOPPE began with something simple: physicians coming together in service of patients.
Long before HOPPE became a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, a small group of hematology and oncology physicians would connect informally to discuss challenging cases, share emerging insights, and support one another through the complexities of cancer care.
Many of those early participants are now among the most respected voices in malignant hematology. Their quiet commitment to collaboration planted the foundation for what HOPPE would eventually become.
When I joined these conversations as a hematology and medical oncology fellow, I never imagined the journey ahead. I still remember creating our first WhatsApp group in 2018, hoping to build a space where physicians could learn together, mentor one another, and be reminded that none of us practices alone.
Over time, those discussions grew into something larger—a community bound by trust, excellence, and service.
Looking back, I recognize that the roots of this work began even earlier. As a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I helped establish MOSAIC—Muslim Organization of Students Actively Integrating Carolina. Our mission was to create dialogue, reduce fear, and bring students together through understanding.
During my time at UNC, I was also honored to receive the Francis Phillips Travel Scholarship, which took me to the remote valleys of northern Pakistan to document the lives of the Kalash people. That experience deepened my appreciation for diversity, storytelling, and the responsibility we carry when given the opportunity to connect communities.
That same spirit continues to shape my work as a physician today. I am currently writing a book, How My Patients Healed Me, reflecting on lessons learned from patients across rural America and large metropolitan centers alike.
As our professional conversations deepened, it became clear that what we were building needed structure, continuity, and a vision larger than any one individual. That realization ultimately led to the formal establishment of HOPPE as a nonprofit organization.
At its heart, HOPPE exists to advance one shared commitment: to improve cancer care and outcomes through collaboration, mentorship, research, and global partnership—always guided by equity, access, and service.
Today, HOPPE is more than a network. It is a community supporting mentorship, fostering research collaboration, welcoming physicians and families, and elevating cancer care locally and globally.
HOPPE’s story is still being written—and we invite you to be part of what comes next.
